Grand Summer South Park Photograph Competition
The Park from 1902 and Now

We are organising another South Park Photographic Competition with a display in the Wildlife Centre of photographs taken this year in the park together with scenes from the park since it opened in 1902.

In conjunction with the Ilford Recorder the best photos from 2017 will be judged and there will be cash prizes for the three best entries. In addition members of our group, with many years of photographic experience, will be holding a free advice event on Saturday 2nd September at 11.00am at the South Park Wildlife Centre. Numbers are limited, so please let us know if you wish to attend the advice event.
Pictures of the park now should be taken at any time up to 16th September We also plan to have entries on display on our website and some entries in the Ilford Recorder paper. We are looking for photos of South Park as it is now, that can be displayed with photographs of the park over its 115 year history. We already hold a collection of old photos, but we are also looking for help to find further scenes from the past. Can you help?
We will also ask visitors to the display in the Autumn to vote for their three favourite photographs, with winners announced in our Christmas edition.
So please forward your best three photos of South Park – your choice of topic e.g. flora and fauna/the lake/play time etc – by 16th September to the e-mail address below.

Ilford Baptist Church Community Event – Sunday 23rd July
The Church is planning a free community event in South Park in the morning to early afternoon, including bouncy castle, simple games (egg and spoon, one-legged races etc.) With some free refreshments and music. This will be at the south end of the park near the bowls club – finishing at 3pm. We will open the Wildlife Centre and have advice on wildlife, conservation and feeding to support this event.

Wildlife Centre News
In the Spring, with the help of volunteers, we painted the benches and fences and tidied the pond area and relocated the rafts. The bench now has a plaque commemorating the nine members of the pre WW1 park swimming club who made the ultimate sacrifice in the Great War.
We are pleased to report that through the Redbridge Council community fund we have been awarded funding for our own boat (and life jackets), which will be used for lake and island conservation activities and clearing up refuse and litter on volunteering days.
We are also pleased to report recent school visits for pond-dipping, bug hunts and park nature conservation walks. These have proved very successful and donations have been made to assist our activities in the park.
A very big thank you to all the volunteers who assisted with these events.
Shortly we will be renewing our Wildlife Centre Insurance, which we are required to have to enable us to run events in the park. We respectfully ask all our supporters to keep up their annual donation of £2, or amount of your choice, as it allows us to maintain our activities in South Park.

Further to our last Newsletter, regrettably the problems locally with fly-tipping, rubbish left on our roads, and waste food dumping in South Park continues. Local residents have recently contacted our MP, Mr Mike Gapes, Redbridge Councillors and Redbridge Civic Pride to seek help to address the problems and identify, name and shame and ensure appropriate penalties are imposed on these irresponsible, anti-social people. Please help us by contacting Redbridge Council of any fly-tipping in our area. You can e-mail on the ‘Report It’ section of the Redbridge website or 020-8554-5000.
